PREFACE Since its founding, the Porter Sargent office has issued comparative and objective surveys of summer programs that have been eagerly looked to by parents and educators when choosing or recommending such. The summer program movement is a momentous renovation, per- haps America s chief contribution to education, effectively providing answers to the development of thousands of young people ranging from primary school to college age. Contemporary educational and social pressures continue to make supplementary summer experience increasingly important, while a diversified range of programs continually expands in scope to fulfill the desire for enrichment, adventure, education and recreation. Recreational camps and generalized summer schools continue to be popular with many boys and girls, but there has been a steady trend in recent years toward stimulating and enriching activities that make the vacation months more meaningful. Adventurous mountain climbing and wilderness survival pro- grams, as well as specialized sports camps and those featuring com- puter studies, have increased in popularity and number, thereby meeting both the educational and the recreational needs of today s v0uth.
