Japan¡¯S labor force has a higher percentage of women working than any other noncommunist country£®Its figures rival those of Sweden and Fin¡ª land and have remained remarkably steady at 50 tO 5 l percent of women fifteen years of age and over from l 955 tO 1 975(Appendix A gives a detailed statistical description of women¡¯S position in the labor force)£®1 Many norms that are used tO describe the nature and scope of women¡¯S work in the national econ¡ª omies of the industrial nations£¬however£¬do not apply to Japan£®Whereas in many countries women work after leaving school and until the birth of their first or second child£¬then remain at home for a few years caring for children and return tO work either part or fun time£¬the Japanese employment system makes such a pattern very diæ´cult for women to follow without great lOSS both in status
