Chapter One Lam Laeo turned sharply, his attention riveted behind him. Ex- cept for the stars, two of Neece s tiny moons alone illuminated the road, and Lam s eyes strained through the darkness, alert for movement. All he could see were the fernlike trees bending over the road, waving in the breeze as if to urge him forward. \"Did you hear something?\" Lam asked the attractive young woman beside him. \"You mean something besides the nightly insect riot?\" Lista asked. Lam listened again for a moment, but he could hear only tree leaves sweeping the air and the tumultuous chirping, croak- ing night life. \"Forget it,\" Lam said. He tugged gently on Lista s arm and they resumed their trek to town, eager to reach their rooms at the inn.
