| The pronunciation is indicated for every basic word introducedin this book. The symbols used for this purpose, as listed beloware similar to those appearing in most standard dictionaries ofrecent vintage. The author has consulted a large number ofdictionaries for this purpose but has relied primarily onWebster s Third New International Dictionary and The RandomHouse Dictionary of the English Language (Unabridged), There are, of course, many English words for which two (ormore) pronunciations are commonly accepted. In virtually aJJcases where such words occur in this book, the author hassought to make things easier for the student by giving just onepronunciation. The only significant exception occurs when thepronunciation changes in accordance with a shift in the part ofspeech. Thus we would indicate that project in the verb form ispronounced pra iekt, and in the noun form, pr~j ekt. It is believed that these relatively simple pronunciationguides will be readily usable by the student, It should beemphasized, however, that the best way to learn thepronunciation of a word is to listen to and imitate an educatedspeaker. |
