| Preliminary Mathematics treats comprehensively the topics in a math-ematics program that prepares students for the study of formal courses inelementary algebra and plane geometry. The book treats the metric sys-tem broadly and makes frequent use of metric measures in problemsettings. As the class textbook or as a supplement to the class textbook oras a text for remedial work, the book provides abundant material to aidstudents in their mastery of the subject matter of the program. The book also presents as supplementary topics: sets, operations withsigned numbers, numeration systems with bases other than ten, andscientific notation. These topics are introduced in such a way as to pro-vide enrichment for those who wish to use them yet not to interfere withthe effective use of the book by those who do not wish to use them. An unusual feature of the book is its method of organization. Eachchapter contains a series of learning units which, with proper applica-tion, students can master by themselves. Units are introduced withproblems that are meaningful to students. Explanations and teachingproblems lead to the statement of important general principles and pro-cedures, which are stated clearly and concisely. Model problems, whosesolutions are accompanied by detailed explanations, teach students howto apply the principles and follow the procedures. Students can com-plete their mastery of the unit by doing a series of well-graded exercisescovering almost every type of difficulty and testing their competenceboth in manipulative skills and in the solution of real problems. Besides organization, other features help students to master the prin-ciples and procedures of each unit. The basic concepts of fhe unit arecarefully developed with the use of simple language. Pictures are usedto help represent mathematical concepts. New words are clearly defined. The author hopes that his full treatment of the topics of algebra andgeometry will supply the teacher with materials and teaching aids thatare helpful in developing concepts and skills in these areas of mathe-matics.
