| It has been a real pleasure for me watching this bookevolve from an idea to reality. The "homemade," thehandcrafted," the "heirloom," and the "keepsake"have always been for me the real essence of the holidayseason. I personally would rather receive somethingfashioned by hand than anything store-bought, and I have always tried to give presentsto my loved ones that I have made myself. My tradition of homemade gifts goes allthe way back to my childhood, when cookie and cake baking were essential to celebratingthe holidays in our home. We packaged noelin hand-pribbons. Inut balls, Vienna tarts, and springerle cookiesainted tins, and wrapped Mrs. Maus s fruitcakes in cellophane with colorfulknitted scarves and mittens for my brothers and sisters, and one year I spent ninemonths knitting asocks--in the mostvery special herringbone scarf for my father. I even recall knitting argyle difficult pattern--for a friend! When I got married I started a "plumpudding" tradition, steaming dozens and dozens of puddings in specially designed handmadebowls. I still make them--only fewer, because the tradition had gotten out of hand. But noone has forgotten the fragrant pudding with the handwritten labels and the recipe for brandiedhard sauce. I have also baked hundreds of panettone in brown-paper sacks, giant sugarcookies, and shortbreads tomyself,~reating more craft ggiveifts.as gifts. In addition to the baked goods, I have foundOne year I made silk-velvet scarves for my women friendsand silk-lined fine-woolen mufflers for the men in my life.
