| IntroductionThe very first edition of The Good Bed and Breakfast Guide waspublished in 1988 to a warm welcome from members of the publichungering after truly independent advice on good-value places tostay in Britain. And that is exactly what the Guide, ten years onand now in its sixth edition, continues to deliver. Once again it has been fully re-researched and rewritten topresent close to 1,200 of the best B&Bs over the length andbreadth of Britain and the Channel Islands. Readers recommendations play a large part in bringing potential newentries to our attention, and keeping us updated about placeswhich featured in the previous edition. These recommendationsare backed up by independent inspections; no free hospitality isaccepted, B&Bs make no payment for inclusion (as they do formany of our competitors), and details about each entry arepainstakingly checked for accuracy (although we do welcomefeedback if we get something wrong!). Nowadays, flexibility and sensitivity to guests needs are even more to the fore. Breakfasts, for example, increasingly are served at a time to suit, and - with a little notice - owners will usually cater to various dietary needs. Contrast that with a few years ago when no-substitute fry-ups were served at, say, 8 to 8.30am full stop. Most B&Bs will provide free maps and local information; some in rural areas will even lend bicycles, fishing gear or |
