| The purpose of the introductory chemistry laboratory course isto provide experimental illustrations of the principles governingthe properties and reactivity of chemical systems and to acquaintthe student with lab procedures used to put theory into practice.The first semester of the laboratory course focuses on under-standing physical properties and the characterization of chemicalcompounds by studying reactivity. The development of basiclaboratory skills is a major priority of this part of the course.The second semester will introduce fundamental techniques ofanalysis, laboratory applications of personal computers, simpleinstrumentation and practical spectroscopy. In addition, thestudent will ~repare full laboratory reports for each of theexperiments.Laboratory Safety The main responsibility for a safe and enjoyable laboratoryexperience l~es with the student. Each experiment is designed tominimize exposure to hazardous chemicals. The laboratory manualwill make specific note of any material that is particularly toxicor noxious. |
