Glover watched the serpent coiling around his calf.
The snake was small--hardly two feet in length--but it
was a krait viper， a bamboo two-step. Being struck by its
fangs left the victim two minutes to live， if he were still
and silent--like Glover was now--or thirty seconds， if he
was on his feet， exerting himself， humping through the
heat-smothered， tropical countryside， heart thumping and
pumping to the rhythm of The Nam.
