PREFACE AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS When asked by my publisher whether or not I wished to revise and update my Arthur Miller Criticism (1930-1967), published in 1969, I had mixed feelings about accepting that difficult responsibility; first, because I am not a specialist in Arthur Miller studies; secondly, because such a compre- hensive bibliography would inevitably invite the exacting criti- cism of learned scholars who might traditionally bear biases or perhaps contempt for a bibliographer; thirdly, because I know that a bibliography of this kind is necessarily a labor of love, a risky and often thankless job, demanding a great deal while giving little more than personal satisfaction in return; and lastly, because, I had, as always, several important edi- torial and research projects to direct at that time. In spite of these difficulties and hesitations, I finally decided to accept the challenge for several reasons. First, I felt obligated to provide a revised and updated bibliography for the general public, and especially for reference librarians, students, and teachers who have patiently used the older bib- liography in spite of its limitations and imperfections. Sec- ondly, I wanted to make this book more functional by dras- tically simplifying the organization. Lastly, no Arthur Miller specialist has, to my knowledge, provided a book-length bib- llography in the period since my own bibliography was pub- fished in 1969. Here, I have attempted to compile a more functional and useful bibliography to save students, teachers, reference librarians, and scholars time, energy, and frustration by put- ting as many known bibliographical sources under one roof, the roof itself better organized than in 1969. As I recall, the 1969 volume, despite its shortcomings, received about ten favorable reviews, most of which were written by reference librarians and experts who knew the value of a comprehensive, though not exhaustive, bibliography. In addition, the book pre- eipitsted at least one harsh review from which I learned a great deal (although nothing about courtesy or scholarly de- corum). vii
