| SLIGHTLY more than a decade has passed since the publica-tion of Robert W. Smuts s study of Women and Work inAmerica. It is both necessary and desirable that this paper-back edition carry a new preface. It is necessary so thatthe reader can learn about the transformations in the roleof women in the labor market that have occurred sincethe late 1950 s; it is desirable so that attention can be calledto some of the research that has been carried out sincethen by the Conservation of Human Resources Projectat Columbia University to which Robert Smuts was at-tached when he wrote his book, as well as to investiga-tions carried out by others. In 1966 and 1967 the Conservation Project publishedLife Styles of Educated Women, by Eli Ginzberg et al.,and Educated American Women: Self Portraits, by Ginz-berg and Yohalem, Columbia University Press. The bibli-ography in the former volume calls attention to the majorstudies that appeared in the years following the appearanceof Smuts s work. |
