BEFORE YOU BEGIN LESSON 1 This is the first of 26 lessons that will open your eyes - in the broadest sense of the phrase - to the geologic wonders of our beautiful Earth. As you know, each lesson primarily consists of three parts: readings from your textbook, a video program, and this study guide. In addi- tion, you may have an assigned laboratory activity to go along with some of the lessons. While you ve read many textbooks and seen many television programs, you may never have worked with a document such as the study guide. So before you read the content for this first chapter, we ll give you a little information about the purpose of each section that will appear in each of the 26 study guide chapters. Know- ing how the guide is organized will help you throughout your \"reveal- ing\" study of the planet Earth. OOAL: This section presents the overall purpose of the lesson. It helps you keep in mind the overriding principle guiding the lesson. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The specific objectives that will be the instructional focus of this lesson are presented in this section. Learn- ing these objectives will enable you learn the material and reach the Goal of the lesson. LESSON ASSIGNMENT: Here, you will be given a concise, easy-to- locate place in each study guide chapter where the steps, assignments, and activities are listed that you should follow to master the Objectives and achieve the lesson s Goal.
