| Chroniclers of the American West believe French trappers were the first Europeans to see North Park, the first to trompthrough its lush meadows and scale itsforested slopes in search of pelts, whichthey found aplenty. It is in the midst ofthis park, in the shadow of DeadmanPeak in the Rockies, that GideonCoopersmith founded the Double CircleC Ranch. He lives there with his wife,Maggs, their young daughter, Annie, andPatrocino, the Mexican segundo. When ayoung hired hand, possibly an escapedconvict, vanishes with Annie s pony,Gideon goes after him. Arriving in sub-zero temperatures in the former miningtown of Columbine, he is run off by theman s mother, Ruth Logan, the cigar-smoking owner of the Miner s DelightSaloon. But later, when Gideon is leftunconscious in the snow, Ruth is the onewho saves his life. Giving up, Gideonreturns home in time to find that a vigi-lante group is also searching for thehired hand--apparently successfully,since he is found lynched. This newsbrings Ruth Logan on a mission ofvengeance, and, as the hangings continue,leads Gideon to fear for the safety of hisentire family. |
