| Can you increase your intelligence? Absolutely. Most people are surprised to learn that intelli-gence quotient (IQ) scores can be raised. Yet, fewexperts would deny that this is possible. The accumulatedevidence has simply become too strong. To give just a fewexamples: Children enrolled in the Head Start program--launched in 1964 to help underprivileged preschoolers--experienced IQ gains as high as 10 points after only a fewmonths in the program; children with learning disabilitiessubjected to electroencephalogram (EEG) biofeedback ther-apy have reportedly gained 10 to 23 IQ points, followingtreatment;~ scientists at the University of California at Irvineraised the IQ scores of test subjects by 8 to 9 points, simplyby having them listen to 10 minutes of Mozart s Sonata forTwo Pianos in D Major, K.448. Of course, such sudden and dramatic gains tend to beshort-lived, tQ gains made by Head Start preschoolers, forexample, tended to dissipate between the third and sixthgrade.2 The jump experienced by the Mozart listeners inIrvine faded after only 15 minutes. Educators call this theFade-Out Effect. Some experts argue that the Fade-Out Effect provesthat you re pretty much stuck with the IQ you had at birth. |
