FOREWORD Foa MOnE than a decade, my primary research interests have foeused upon bridging the disciplines of medicine, ph)sioh)g) ,.l~SVCh~l~ w . .,. and psychiatry. As a result of these interests. I am convinced that many aspects of the teaching, research aim practice of modem medicine can he altered to provide you with better health care. To facilitate the teaching of these concepts, a Behavioral Medieine course has been initiated at tlarvard Medical School. A 1)ivision of Behavioral Medicine Section has heen formed at Boston s Beth Israel Itospital to continue collaborative research in this area and to apply these prin- ciples to the care of patients. One of the major tenets of the teaching and practice of Behavioral Medicine is that individuals nmst assume more responsibili~ for their own health care. Your health is both your responsibility and that of your l~hvsieian; it is a two-way proposition. My hope is that this book will provide a new perspec- tive which will allow you and members of the medical profession to interact better.
