| These two books are devoted to the pharmacological benefits of certain foods and feature recipes full of those ingredients reputed to prevent disease and promote health and healing. Carper, author of Health Care U.S.A. ( LJ 7/87) and the best- selling The Food Pharmacy (Bantam, 1988), writes in a reasoned tone of the many recent discoveries concerning food as medicine; her recipes are accompanied by Food Pharmacy Facts as well as sidebars on techniques and ingredients ("In Defense of the Avocado"). Though most recipes are introduced by headnotes extolling their various health benefits, the dishes are varied and quite appealing. The Prevention editors include lengthy chapters on specific health problems and the "top 100" healing foods, followed by dozens of recipes. Their food, as well as their text, is less sophisticated than Carper s, but the magazine s readership guarantees a large audience. Though there is some duplication of material between the two titles, most collections will need both. |
