A beginning NEHUMA LAY ON HER BED in a brief moment of re- lease. One pain had just finished wracking her small body and the tight band of pressure had relaxed, gathering strength for its next sure grip. Through the film of mois- ture covering her eyes she could see several people whis- pering and gesturing. The midwife had not yet arrived and the contractions were coming closer and closer. Still, she had not screamed. Her brother stood near her, round and pale, but stoic, letting her squeeze his hand. \"Just hold on, that s a girl, hold on The little man is sure eager to make an appearance.\" And Hayim grinned, a peculiar out-of-control grin that made Nehuma groan. \"Morris . . . Morris . . .\" She moved her head from k~ide to side. \"Shhh. We sent him up to the roof. You don t really want him here. You don t want him to see all . . . this ~..\" and with their clutched hands he made an abortive sweep of her large taut abdomen and the disagreeable clut- ter of the childbirth scene. She moaned again. \"Yes, yes. Morris, ahhh . . .\" An- other pain bit into her groin. She was sure she would suf- focate this time; yes, she could barely breathe. Nausea rose up and she could feel her legs begin to quiver. \"Please,\" she whispered, \"Hayim, ahhh, the third time it s supposed to be easy, where is the midwife? Please. No. Oh no... I want Morrisl\" Hayim, terrified, saw her mouth form a sudden silent scream and that enormous belly rise up, heave, and move like a wave, rippling downward, while a huge grunt, like a dying animal, tore out of his beautiful sister s mouth. One of the women shouted~ \"She s starting to push; wait Nehuma, wait.\" \"I can t waitl\" she screamed. 3
