    Perhaps the foremost English eninposer of the early twentieth century, Edward Elgar (I857 1934) was also one of the last great Romantics. His music combined striking color effects and a superb sense of structure with rich melody and an acute
    sensitivity. The orchestral works of Elgar most performed and recorded are his
    brilliant Variations on an Original Theme (or Enigma Variations) and the aptly
    named Pomp and Circumstance Marches.
    Known for the variety and richness of their melodies, rhythmic drive and moods
    ranging from delicate and playful to passionate and flamboyant, the Enigma
    Variations depict unnamed friends of the composer and are based upon a theme
    never fully revealed--hence the enigma.
    Four of the five stirring Pomp and Circumstance Marches are included here. Filled with a distinctively English grandeur, they are magnificent display pieces featuring simple emotions captured and preserved in memorable melodic treatments.
