内容简介

In the first decade of the 20th century, while the rest of the world was still wearing out the waltz, America was jumping to a new kind of music: ragtime. In an era when there was a piano in most homes and a stack of sheet music on every piano, ragtime hits topped the charts. Sheet music sales for a popular rag could reach the million mark, and when they did, America played it in their parlors, and applauded it in vaudeville houses coast to coast. Celebrating a riotous assortment of people, places and things--from poison ivy, Alabama, Sappho and dill pickles to fig leaves, knockout drops, Frisco and spaghetti--ragtime tunes caught America at its playful best, and etched themselves forever in our musical imagination, sometimes fading only to return with renewed zest.
Here is a choice collection of 25 of the most famous rags written in the years from 1904 to 1910, the period generally regarded as the golden age of ragtime music. Selected by David A. Jasen, the well-known ragtime performer, composer and historian of popular music, the rags here range from the early (and extremely rare) "Whoa! You Heiffer," by New Orleanian A1 Verges, to three of Scott Joplin's works, including his brilliant "Fig Leaf Rag," to works by Tin Pan Alley's hottest composers of the day, among them George Botsford, Harry Armstrong and Egbert Van Alstyne.
Many of the rags reprinted here from their original editions have been scarce or unavailable until now. No small part of the charm of the collection is the splendid array of sheet music covers, reprinted along with the full text of the music—a bonanza of period popular art ranging from the eccentric to the beautiful. When you open the pages of this book, you invite a distinctive musical treat. Jump in. You'll soon be shouting, "Oh! You Devil" and "Whoa! You Heiffer," and tapping your feet to the exciting rhythms of "Grace and Beauty," "Wild Cherries" and "The White Wash Man."
Original Dover (1986) publication, reprinted from sheet music for 25 ragtime compositions arranged for piano, originally issued by various music publishers. Table of contents. Introduction. 25 black-and-white illustrations, vi + 122pp. 9 ~ 12. Paperbound.
