Although his musical output was not large, French composer Erik Satie (1866-1925) exercised a profound effect on 20th-century music. His innovative harmonies, freedom of form, and mastery of musical understatement influenced a diverse company of modern masters, ranging from Debussy and Ravel to Milhaud, Poulenc and Cage.
According to English musicologist Rollo Myers, the twenty short pieces known as Sports et Divertissements are especially revealing examples, of the composer's talents: "These little masterpieces of wit and ironic observation reveal his genius perhaps more convincingly than any of his other works, with the exception of [the cantata] Socrate."
Satie composed the pieces - brilliant thumbnail sketches of various outdoor sports and amusements-to accompany an album of charming, sophisticated drawings
by Charles Martin, a well-known illustrator of the day. He also added droll verbal.
