内容简介

Connoisseurs of rag are aware that original, creative syncopation does not stop with Joplin. The ragtime revival is only beginning to rediscover forgotten rags composed by little-known pianists and arrangers (including many women) and printed by small specialized local music publishers. The great obstacle to further rag renown is of course the rarity of the original sheet music; this collection brings together some of the most geographically and stylistically diverse quality rags written over the entire two decades of the ragtime era.
Ragtime Rediscoveries presents the original sheet music (including covers) of 64 unfamiliar rags of superior musical excellence as well as historical interest. Trebor Jay Tichenor, well-known ragtimer, composer, collector and editor (see Ragtime Rarities, also from Dover) has located the scattered and sometimes unique copies of sheet music, and discussed their musical quality and relevance to ragtime history in his introducton.
The rags here range from "The Pride of Bucktown" (Robert S. Roberts, 1897), one of the earliest printed, through Willie Anderson's rare masterpiece "Key-stone Rag" (1921), a survival from ragtime's fadeout and an echo of past charms. The classical rag from Missouri is represented by three neglected works of James Scott. But the focus is on the diversity of rag style and locale. Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Detroit and Wichita offer rags equal to any from New York City or New Orleans. Iowa, Nebraska, and rural Vermont spawned original experiments in syncopation. In "Levee Revels" (1898), W. C. O'Hare of Shreveport, Louisiana anticipates Joplinesque sophistication with "one of the most inspired and soulful cakewalk-style pieces ever written." Les C. Copeland, Kansas. born pianist who took his rags to Paris (where Gershwin praised him) adds a Midwestern flavor to his early "Cabbage-Leaf Rag" (1909). Mixtures of ra8 with country, fox-trot and even blues styles (Maggio's "I Got the Blues," 1908) show the flexibility and later developments of the form. A good many womer (Julia Lee Niebergall, Geraldine Dobyns, Irene Cozad, Imogene Giles, etc.) again demonstrate the appeal rag had for different kinds of composers.
