The paradoxical title of Bonnie Roberts' new collection of poems, To Hide in the Light, evokes the ancient story of Eve, who only thought to hide herself once she had tasted the fruit of the tree of knowledge and seen the light...Things known in Roberts' world are as familiar to most Southerners as dirt, a favorite topic of hers, her presentation of the quotidian so immediate and sensual, we are reminded of how sublime life can be in its accruing momentary experiences... -- poet Susie Paul, associate professor of English at Auburn University in Montgomery, First Draft, Spring 1999The poems embrace the contraries of joy and sorrow (without sentimentality) as they explore the inner landscapes of the heart. This poet is indeed a legitimate "painter of hope" as she dares to plumb the dark in her way to discovering light. -- Margo LaGatutta, Alabama State Poetry Society judge for 1998 Book of the Year Award, The Huntsville Times, 03/14/99

    作者简介

Bonnie Gibbs Roberts, a native of Alabama, lives in Huntsville. A teacher of creative writing in the Magnet Program at Lee High School, she has also taught literature for Calhoun Community College and served as a poet-in-the-schools for the Alabama State Council on the Arts. She received an M.A. in literature from the University of Alabama and a B.S. Degree in French and English, Secondary Education, from Auburn University. Additional postgraduate work includes studies in French at the University of Dijon, France, and Vanderbilt University. She has also completed Theological Education by Extension, Education for Ministry, through the University of the South's School of Theology. In 1988, she won an Individual Fellowship in Literature from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and Humanities. As a fellowship winner in a competition sponsored by Eastern Washington University, she studied with major Irish poets, including Theo Dorgan and Paula Meehan, and led poetry workshops for American writers in Dublin. In 1993, she studied French Literature with Brown University in Paris as a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow. An internationally-published poet, she has given readings at the Spoleto Festival, Charleston, South Carolina; at American Imagery Conferences, New York and Los Angeles; and at Bewley's Museum, Dublin, Ireland. Bonnie loves teaching young people, who inspire her; retreating to monasteries and beaches; taking care of her two dogs, Jet and Heidi; and living in the South, where life is rich, and where she can plant her feet in the earth and sea, regain her lost connections, and continually make new ones. Her most recent honor was being selected as a Fulbright scholar to study the arts for five weeks in Turkey. To Hide in the Light was nominated for the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and received the Alabama State Poetry Society's 1998 Book of the Year Award.
