| It s not that Michael Goodwin and I are in love withdragons. What we re in love with is good writing andgood illustration -- fantasy conceived and visualized withlively imagination and consummate skill. Dragons weremerely a theme to bind together the works of some ofour favorite writers and illustrators. How were we toknow that old masters and fine new talents would createsuch marvelous serpents that we couldn t even fit themall into one book? Dragons of Light is only the first oftwo volumes. The second, Dragons of Darkness, will bepublished in the fall of 1981. These books are unique in several respects. First,to our knowledge no publisher in recent years has triedto create such a close bonding of story and art, witheach illustrator selected because his style of work isparticularly well-suited to the story he is visualizing.Second, because the book is so unusual, publishers werenaturally a bit wary about committing themselves to itbefore the stories had actually been put together. Thismeant that we had to ask authors for stories before wehad a contract with a publisher; and because all thingsin the world of publishing take time, many authors andartists waited, with varying degrees of patience, for agood long time before getting paid. In a world wheremortgages fall due far more regularly than freelancewriters and artists checks arrive, such forebearanceis rare. Yet without that cooperative spirit from all whosework appears here and in the next volume, this bookwould have been impossible. |
