Foreword This popularly written medical science book serves two major sectors of the reading public: 1) physicians and their al- lied health professionals, and 2) lay people concerned with health maintenance. The numerous references and scientific presentations of the information will serve the first group well, while the stepwise structure of the book, ready explana- tions, good humor, and Glossary will help the general public. For both groups, this book offers two things: First, it represents a cohesive \"clearinghouse\" of infor- mation that, to date, had previously been scattered in diverse sources ranging from medical books to media headlines. The book reveals the medical scientific bases for preventing the major lethal disorders, stressing, for example, the molecular level reasons why it may be possible to prevent or delay 80% of all cancers.
