Foreword Over the years, research concerning the relationship be- tween the psyche and the body has produced a vast litera- ture of books, articles, and monographs. Some have elabo- rated theoretical constructs to explain the psyche s effect on the body; others have dwelt upon the untapped powers of the mind that can be harnessed to aid the body s healing processes. Yet rarely are these two phenomena combined in such a way as to explain their delicate interplay. Only by examining both the psychological factors that predispose one to illness and the mental powers that become available within a person through various means such as biofeed- back, meditation, etc., does one begin to understand their complex relationship. In Mind as Healer, Mind as Slayer, the author has confronted both issues, as the title suggests, as well as providing extensive coverage of the new stress- reduction techniques. The introductory chapter is an excellent overview of the role of consciousness and of the mind/body interaction, with a humanistic emphasis on promoting health rather than eliminating disease.
