1 The Old Man and Woman Marissa squirmed in her seat, her stomach crying out for food. She looked around the dinner table, which gleamed with the special china and silver used only once a year for Passover. The rich fragrances of matzo ball soup and turkey made her stomach growl, but she knew better than to complain. Her father, acob, was sympathetic to many things, but whenever she told him she was hungry, he answered, \"May you never know the hunger I knew.\" At that moment Jacob was too absorbed in leading the lengthy seder to notice Marissa s misery. Her uncle, David, playful as her father was serious, caught her eye and winked. Next to him sat her grandfather, who usually i mumbled and read to himself at the seder.
