ONE Senator Richard Cromwell awakened, and with a sigh of resignation accepted the fact that it was five o clock in the morning. He had not yet glanced at his music-first-tinkle-and- then-firm-alarm Japanese bedside clock, nor as it necessary. It was five o clock. Senator romwell was fifty-seven years old, and ever since he had turned fifty-six he had awakened in the morning at five with a bursting bladder. He had mentioned this once to Dr. Gillespie at the club bar, and Gillespie had said, \"Well, you re fifty-six, take it or leave it,\" whatever that meant. Stumbling sleepily into his bath- room and urinating, the senator recalled the brief passage with Gillespie and murmured, \"Horse s ass.\" It was a cold summer morning.
