| For decades the Iron Curtain divided Germany, and so developments in art and design - in the present instance, studio ceramics - also diverged in East and West. The relevant surveys have hitherto been devoted almost exclusively to West German ceramics, while the extremely diverse ceramics scene in the GDR, on the other hand, was largely ignored in the West. ARNOLDSCHE Art Publishers have published the present 500-page book to accompany the exhibition "Vessel | Sculpture. German and International Ceramics since 1946" at the GRASSI Museum in Leipzig. Large format photographs show 561 ceramic works dating from 1946 to the present. The focus is on works by East German studio ceramicists, including Walter Gebauer, Karl Jüttner, the Körtings, Gertraud Möhwald and Karl Fulle. The work of West German ceramicists such as Richard Bampi, Karl and Ursula Scheid, Lotte Reimers and Beate Kuhn also figures prominently. Comparisons drawn between East and West German works reveal fascinating glimpses of similarities and differences in development. A broad range of work by currently active ceramicists in both the new and the old Federal states illustrates developments common to both since the Wall came down. Works by contemporary ceramicists of international standing ‒ including such distinguished names as Lucie Rie, Gilbert Portanier, Pompeo Pianezzola and Carmen Dionyse - position German trends in an international context. The diversity of generations and countries represented in the present publication - objects by 288 artists and workshops from 27 countries - is reflected in the ceramics shown: object types range from vessels to free-standing and relief sculpture. Variations on body composition as well as glazes and shapes are limitless. Vivid and iridescent colours co-exist with the reticent, soft and muted colours of the 1950s and 1960s. Convention-defying shapes, sculptural busts and even tectonically configured vessels confront classic vessel types such as bowls, basins and vases. Biographies of all artists and workshops represented, as well as reproductions of their marks and signatures, make this comprehensive new publication on contemporary ceramics a standard work for all lovers of ceramics. Vessel | Sculpture: The new standard work on ceramics after the Second World War shows 561 one-off pieces and limited editions by 288 studio ceramicists and workshops from 27 countries, with a hitherto unprecedented focus on East German ceramics.
