ThisisadetailedaccountofthelifeofGeorgeHatem,alsoknownasMaHaide.TheauthorbeginswiththeearlydevelopmentoftheChineseCommunistpartyandwiththechildhoodandeducationofGeorgeHatemintheU.S.A.HethenfollowsthefurthereducationofHatem,hismovingtoShanghaiin1934attheageof24,hisinvolvementwiththepoliticsofthattimeandplace,andhiseventuallyjoiningtheRedArmyattheendoftheLongMarch.In1937hejoinedtheCommunistparty,andin1949hewaspartoftheRedArmywhichconqueredBeijing.Shortlyafterward,hebecamethefirstforeignertobegrantedChinesecitizenship.FormanyyearshewasanadvisortotheMinistryofPublicHealthwhereheinfluencedpolicyinChina'sstrugglewithvenerealdiseaseandleprosyupuntilhisdeathin1988.
