First, of course, my grat tude lies with Dr. L. S. B. Leakey. It was he who originally su~ gested that I should study chimpanzees, he who found money t finance my early field work, and he who arranged for me to writ up my results for a Ph.D. dissertation at Cambridge University Last ~ but by no means least- it was through Leuis s recom mendation that Hugo came to photograph the chimpanzees.
