PREFACE PURPOSE Classroom teachers and reading specialists are doing a better job of teaching reading than they have ever done before. However, they want to be even better! To accomplish this goal, teachers want to know what new ideas have been dis- covered in the teaching of comprehension--and how they can incorporate them with the things that they are already doing well. This book was written to address this concern. Teaehers have always wanted to know--\"How do I teach children to compre- hend?\" During the last decade, re~ding specialists, classroom teaehers, and re- searchers have devoted much of their professional energy to discussing and ex- ploring reading comprehension. Translating into classroom praetiees newly discovered insights, understandings, and ideas about teaching comprehension is the major purpose of Improving Beading Comprehension. Throughout the text the emphasis is on how to teach comprehension. Its single greatest focus is its application of a direet instruetion paradigm, with stress on the critical step of teachers modeling new processes and skills as they teach, to the real-life teaching of reading comprehension. Every attempt has been made to summarize the supporting research and theory and translate it into practice. However, this book does not represent a compendium of all of the research in comprehension, for only those areas considered most likely to have direct impaet on how teachers teach have been addressed. This is a praetieal book whose pri- mary goal is to act as a helpful, guiding tool in the teaching of reading compre- hension in today s classroom. AUDIENCE Improving Beading Comprehension focuses heavily on the elementary teacher because that is where much of reading instruction takes place. However, the book has been written so that it can be utilized by reading teachers and eontent teachers at all levels. It is intended for undergraduate and graduate students in most reading courses, as well as for inserviee teachers enrolled in workshops or classes run by their school systems. Additionally, it can be used on its own as an on-the-job re- source by teaehers and specialists. In short, this text can be used by anyone who is concerned with the effective teaching of reading comprehension.
