Getting his first newspaper job at age ten， he determinedly set out to rise through the ranks as a sportswriter， working for papers in Athens and Atlanta， Georgia， before taking a sports editor position in Chicago. After three years in Chicago， he landed his current job as a columnist for the Atlanta Constitution .
