A c k n o Cvle dgrn e n t s It was Deni Auclair s idea that I write a book, even though I d never written one before and might have nothing to say, for all I knew. However, Ms. Auclair and Putnam s mentioned a figure large enough to render me momentarily insane. Gid- dily, I promised to find something to say. That was July, 1983. By July, 1984, I d spent the money, written nothing and stopped returning Deni Auclair s phone calls. There was nothing to do but give back the money. Putnam s, however, didn t want the money; Putnam s wanted a book. It remains an accurate observation that the lack of alternatives clears the mind wonderfully. I want to thank the people who helped, beginning with those who sheltered me. Pete Simmons lent me his house at Spofford Lake, New Hampshire. David Berg invited me to stay at his house in Houston in July, 1984, because, he said, Houston was so miserable in July I would not be tempted to do anything but write. Kit and Billy Wohl lent me their wonder. ful, haunted apartment in New Orleans s French Quarter for the month of August--anyone who will spend July in Houston will not flinch at August in New Orleans.
