Foreword These stories, thematically related, are arranged chron- ologically from 163o to the present day and are de- signed to trace, by the use of fiction and dramatized history, the rise and fall of the Puritan ethic in New York and New England. By Puritan ethic I mean that preoccupying sense, found in certain individuals, of a mission, presumably divinely inspired, toward their fellow men. To show how different puritans have accepted, converted, stood aside from or rejected the burden of this mission, I have chosen members of the Winthrop family. Only John and Wait Still are modeled on actual persons.
