| Doesn t everyone who watched a convention,a space shot or the evening news in the sixtiesremember that pretty, effervescent girl whoseemed to be everywhere at once, and towardwhose microphone Presidents, senators andCabinet officers seemed to make a beeline?Among Those Present is Nancy Dickerson sstory of those times when she was the first femalenational-network news correspondent, of theyears of competition and hard work in a man sworld that preceded her prominence, and of hermarriage, childbearing and career as a success-ful lecturer that followed. In 1951 Nancy Hanschman, a wide-eyedidealistic, convent-educated girl from Ameri-ca s Heartland (Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, "wherenothing ever happened") arrived in Washingtonto change the world. By persistent effort andcharm she was hired as a staff member of theSenate Foreign Relations Committee, and re-ceived her initiation with Senator McCarthy sattack on it. The fear and cowardice of thoseyears were a rude shock, and she grew upquickly. But because she was a woman, the jobhad its limitations, and within a couple of yearsshe joined CBS. There, with the rise of televi-sion, she came to prominence as that enchantingreporter who always seemed to be in the rightspot at the right time, more than holding herown with her male competitors because sheasked tough questions and stood out in a crowd. In fact, she scored so many beats that it wasperhaps understandable that some male corre-spondents made life tougher for her; the barriersthat were thrown in her way ranged from pettyinconveniences to whispers that her scoops hadmore to do with her sex than with poundingthe pavements. ~ |
