| On advice from the field, this Shorter Edition of the Fourth Edi- tion of The Norton Reader is some 100 pages longer than its predecessor. Its 123 selections fall into three groups, each approxi- mately one-third of the whole. The first group, consisting of material entirely new to The Norton Readers, has been culled from nominations made by the seven editors, by the chairman and staff of W. W. Norton & Co., by a trio of special advisors from com- munity and four-year colleges, and by generously interested col- leagues across the country. Representative entries from this group occur throughout the text, most prominently in Signs of the Times and People, both of which are almost totally new. Authors appear- ing for the first time to name but ten--include Woody Allen, Isaac Asimov, Jimmy Breslin, Martin Buber, Art Buchwald, Carlos Castaneda, Doris Lessing, Mary McCarthy, Norman Podhoretz, and Niko Tinbergen. The second group consists of material that has hitherto not appeared in the Shorter Editions but that has received highly affirmative response from users of the Regular Editions. These field-tested essays also occur throughout the book, including among their authors Hannah Arendt, Matthew Arnold, W. H. Auden,Ambrose Bierce, Wayne C Booth, Thomas DeQuincey, JohnDonne, Loren Eiseley, Benjamin Franklin, Ernest Hemingway,Martin Luther King, Jr., and Dylan Thomas. The third group comprises entries that have been carried overfrom the Third Edit ion of the Shorter Edition because they havefirmly stood the tests of time and extended use--for example,Stegner s "The Town Dump," E. B. White s "Once More to theLake," Bronowski s "The Reach of Imagination," and Holt s "HowTeachers Make Children Hate Reading." Users of the last Shorter Edition will observe several changesin this one. On Mind now precedes On Education for obviousreasons. On Language and Communications reappears after a tem-porary and lamentable absence the topic is too important toneglect. The entries in An Album of Styles, now much expanded, carry individual headings for the first time handles, as it were, |
