| This outline presents the fundamentals of a first-year course mcollege mathematics. Such a general course usually is intended forstudents who do not plan to continue the study of mathematics, butwho, nevertheless, would like to obtain a knowledge of the basic con-cepts of mathematics oil a college level. This book will furnish arapid review for the reader who has completed the course, and willfurnish supplementaly reading for one who is enrolled in this course/of study. A course in general college mathematics may encompass manythings. Each instructor and each university have points of particularemphasis. This book has concentrated on the fundamental conceptsof algebra, trigonometry, and analytic geometry, with an introductionto the calculus. The book is complete in itself and, although it is notintended to be used as a textbook, it may be read with profit by thosewho are beginning the study of college mathematics. It should pro-vide any reader with a thorough knowledge of the usual topics studiedduring the first year in this field. Each concept has been illustrated with figures, solved problems,and examples. Neatness and systematic manner of solving the prob- lems have been stressed, for these should be products of the study of mathematics. Logical thinking and elimination of errors can be achieved by the adaptation of systematic procedures. Abbreviated tables have been placed in the back of the book for computational purposes. If the reader finds a need for greater accuracy, he can ob- tain more extensive tables in this College Outline Series and will not experience any difficulty in using them. A thorough knowledge of any branch of mathematics cannot be ob- tained without solving problems. Consequently, a few typical exer- cises have been placed at the end of each chapter. The student is |
