    reign)attheShabtupastureneartheSakyamonasteryinTsang.
    Hisfather,KongbuDorje,andmother,GuomoLangje,hadfive
    children,ofwhomGedunTruppawasthethird.Onthenightof
    hisbirth,thehousewasransackedbybandits,andthefamilysince
    livedinpoverty.Asachild,GedunTruppahelpedhisparentstend
    sheep.
    Attheageoffifteen(1405orthethirdyearofMingemperor
    Chengzu'sreign)GedunTruppabecamealamaistmonkafter
    takinghisvowsasagetsulbeforeDondrubKedrupattheNathang
    monastery(locatedaboutfifteenkilometreswestofwherethe
    Tashilhunpomonasterystandstoday).Afterhebecameafully
    ordainedmonkatagetwenty,hebegantotravelextensivelyinU.
    AttheDradrugmonastery,hestudiedCauseandLogicandThe
    MiddleWayunderthetutorshipofKunzanpa.Atthetime,Tsong-
    khapahadacquiredfameasthefounderoftheYellowSect(the
    Ge-lug-paSect)In1415(thethirteenthyearofMingemperor
    Chengzu'sreign)hewasgivingsermonstomonksandlaymenin
    DrashiDokhaattheinvitationofDrakpaGyaltsen,thefifthreli-
    giouskingofthePhag-druregime.GedunTruppa,nowtwenty-
    fiveyearsold,wenttothesesermonswithhisteacher,Dondrup
    Kedrup,andbecameacquaintedwithTsongkhapa.
    Tsongkhapa,alsoknownasLozangDrakpa,wasborninthe
    seventeenthyearofZhizhcnginthereignoftheYuanemperor
    Shundi(1357)atTsongkhanearthecityofXininginQinghai
    Province.Hebecameamonkattheageofsevenandtookhisgetsul
    vowsbeforeDondrubRinchen.Atseventeen(1372orthefifthyear
    ofMingemperorTaizu'sreign)hewenttoTibettostudyBuddhist
    philosophy.In1385,whenhewastwenty-nineyearsold,Tsong-
    khapatookhisgelongvowsbeforeTsufrimRichenattheNamgyal
    monasteryinYarlung.,
    Bynowmanyreligioussects,eachwithitssub-sects,hadcome
    intobeinginTibet.AmongthemweretheNying-ma-paSect(Red),
    theKa-gyu-paSect(White),theSa-kya-paSect(Variegated)and
    theBon-po(Black).OfthefourtheKa-gyu-paandSa-kya-pasects
    werethemostinfluentialandhadthebiggestfollowings."Butas
    thetwosectstriedtooutnumbereachotherbyrecruitingconvens,
    devotedandscholarlymonksinthetwosectsdiminishedin
    number,andbythelateYuanandeariyMingdynasties,the
    teachingofexotericandesotericBuddhismhadbeengreatly
    weakened;exceptforahandfulofhighlyprincipledmonks,few
    knewanythingaboutmonasticdiscipline,andthemonksdressed
    inlayattire."

    YaHanzhang,asocialscientist,was
    borninafamilyofHanorigininLinxia,
    QansuProvince,in1916.Attheageof
    twenty,ontherecommendationofhis
    friends,hewasacceptedasanunor-
    dainedlamaistmonkbythefamedLa-
    brangMonastery,wherehestudied
    spokenTibetanandtheTibetanscript.
    InMay1937hewenttotheDrepungin
    LhasawithGrandLivingBuddhaJa-
    myangasasecretary.Hisstaythere
    madehimanexpertonthismajorla-
    maserywith8,800monks.InApril1938,
    aftertheoutbreakoftheWarofResist-
    anceAgainstJapan,YawenttoYan'an
    viaIndia,SingaporeandHongKong.In
    Yan'anhebeganhisresearchintothe
    historyofChina'sethnicminorities.
    Shortlyafterhebecameanassistant
    representativeofthePanchenHead-
    quartersin1950,hereturnedtoTibet
    firstasamemberoftheTibetWork
    Committeeandlaterasthecommittee's
    secretary-generalandthendirectorof
    itsresearchdepartment.HeleftTibetin
    1958becauseofpoorhealthtobecome
    thevice-chairmanoftheInstituteofNa-
    tionalMinoritiesinBeijing.Since1983
    hehasbeenanadvisortothisinstitute.
    Hewasalsoatdifferenttimesthepro-
    vostoftheUniversityofInnerMongolia
    anddirectoroftheInstituteofReligion
    oftheChineseAcademyofSocial
    Sciences.
