InMay1937hewenttotheDrepungin LhasawithGrandLivingBuddhaJa- myangasasecretary.Hisstaythere madehimanexpertonthismajorla- maserywith8,800monks.InApril1938, aftertheoutbreakoftheWarofResist- anceAgainstJapan,YawenttoYan'an viaIndia,SingaporeandHongKong.In Yan'anhebeganhisresearchintothe historyofChina'sethnicminorities. Shortlyafterhebecameanassistant representativeofthePanchenHead- quartersin1950,hereturnedtoTibet firstasamemberoftheTibetWork Committeeandlaterasthecommittee's secretary-generalandthendirectorof itsresearchdepartment.HeleftTibetin 1958becauseofpoorhealthtobecome thevice-chairmanoftheInstituteofNa- tionalMinoritiesinBeijing.Since1983 hehasbeenanadvisortothisinstitute.
