With the mania for classification that taints our cultural heritage，
critics tend to dismiss all radical analyses of modern society as
pessimistic or optimistic， according to whether or not the virulent
diseases diagnosed are accompanied by spontaneous regenera-
tive processes. This leaves the field clear for \"practical，\" \"bal-
anced\" analyses which argue that nothing is fundamentally wrong
with modern society-that its ills can be cured with enough will
power， education， liberal values， and a half-dozen proposals for
legislative reform.
