The two men at the agency, Young and the salesman, had already left. The traffic was heavy on Route 1. She had to wait for the light a block away to bring it to a halt before she could turn out onto the four-lane highway and head south. Then she con- centrated on driving until she was clear of the sprawling busi- ness district of Woodbridge, Virginia, a jungle of brightly colored neon in the early ]anuary dusk. The congestion ended after to wooded land on either side. the last traffic light, giving way Rita relaxed at the wheel and let her thoughts turn to the evening ahead. She was going with Louise Brooks, her room- mate in the house she had inherited from her great-aunt, to see The Towering Inferno that night. She had read one of the books the movie was based on and looked forward to seeing it. After a two-mile drive she moved into the left lane thinking about what to have for dinner as she blinked her direction sig- nal to make her turnoff.
