The silence of the Amazon rain forest was shattered by
a short burst of autofire that sent a stream of 7.62 mm
slugs zipping through the dense foliage. Shredded
leaves blew in every direction， and chunks of bark，
chewed from tree trunks， pattered to the ground. The
initial burst was the signal for other weapons to open
fire， and for long moments the jungle reverberated
with the harsh rattle of gunshots.
If the owner of the AK-47 that had started the cycle
of fire had waited a few more seconds， the outcome
might have been different. As it was， the intended tar-
gets simply melted into the rich undergrowth， leaving
the ambushers to stare at empty space.
The mistake， however， had been made. The targets
had to be relocated and dealt with. Recriminations
could--and would--come later. A harsh voice rasped
out a command， and armed men clad in camouflage
combat uniforms burst from their places of conceal-
ment and began to advance in the direction of the
vanished targets， weapons up and ready.
A single shot rang out from somewhere deep in the
