| Brett and Phyllida and Alex and Jenny and Peter and except for the booming of cannon and a sweeping of muttering Greek peasants one wouldn t really know it was the time of the Greek War for Independence (circa 1821 on). Although occasionally someone, like American Phyllida, will burst out with: "I do wish they would hurry up with the relief of Athens." After escaping from a Turkish Sultan s harem (where nothing absolutely unAmerican went on) Phyllida and her aunt are reluctantly hoisted aboard the yacht of British aristocrat Brett who is in a misanthropic sulk after being left at the altar by his intended. Enter Alex, a lordly Greek, who rescues them from unlordly piratical Greek types and later Jenny, Brett s sister. Nasty Peter, the brother whose involvement in the Greek fight for independence keeps Phyllida mucking around Greek waters, shows up and pairing (never coupling) occupies the five. Alex turns out to be somewhat of a rat but does not show his fangs (kidnapping Brett and Phyllida for a money marriage) until Phyllida has refused him. But finally Brett and Phyllida marry, Brett inherits a Dukedom, Jenny shakes free of Peter who is placed under Alex s custody. To each his deservedly own. |
