Walk through any bookstore and read the rifles.Listen to the conversations at any party. Watch any televisiontalk show. These days, unhappy adult children seem to beblaming their parents for everything from alcoholism tofailure in love to career problems. It seems that we live in anation full of "toxic" parents, that most of us came fromdysfunctional families. As the parent of two young children, I take all thisnegativity personally. And I worry. Books, magazine articles,and television specials abound about the myriad ways parentscan permanently traumatize their children. Take your childrento church, teach them spiritual values, and you've "crammedreligion down their throats." Discipline y(~ur children, andyou've "repressed" them. Be too permissive, and they'llbecome insecure. Teach them to work, and you've robbedthem of their childhood. Love them too much, and you'vespoiled them. |
