内容简介

From Publishers Weekly Selected by British folklorist Neil Philip from a two-volume collection Yeats edited during his 20s, these rollicking tales include moralistic lessons, ghost stories and legends about the "little people." In stories delivered in a distinctly Irish lilt, Jamie Freel flies with the fairies to find his lady; the 12 wild geese are rescued by their sister (a variant of the tale told by the Grimm Brothers); and Daniel O'Rourke is flown to the moon by a crow. Lynch's black-and-white drawings and silhouetted figures suit the carefree humor or spellbinding drama variously found in such stories as "The Soul Cages" and "The Horned Women." Although connoisseurs of fairy tales will welcome this collection unreservedly, many of its tales require prior knowledge of Irish traditions and culture, and may not be easily understood by young readers. All ages. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From School Library Journal Grade 7 Up-- Nineteen stories are appealingly illustrated with Lynch's black-and-white line drawings and silhouettes. Folktale enthusiasts will recognize familiar themes and motifs in "The Twelve Wild Geese" (similar to Andersen's "Wild Swans"); "The Lazy Beauty and Her Aunts" (a Rumpelstiltskin variant); and "The Haughty Princess" (related to the Grimms' King Thrushbeard). Also included is Yeats's version of the Fin McCoul/Clever Oona story, "A Legend of Knockmany." While several of the tales are thematically mature, the majority have swift action, humor, magic, and the language of Yeats to recommend them for reading or telling aloud to older children. With an introduction aimed at adult readers and closing notes on sources, this is a good additional title for large folktale collections, and is much more accessible than Yeats's original two-volume set. --Janice M.
